Gentle Teaching Stories:

Everyone needs to feel safe, loved, loving, and engaged to grow and nurture their true spirit.

September 28, 2023/inBlog, Employment, Gentle Teaching, Stories

I try to use gentle teaching everyday ,whenever I interact with anyone.  I have learned from gentle teaching that gentleness is not something you learn and only use at your place of work. It is a way of life that you carry with you at home, at school, and in public. Gentle Teaching is about unconditional love and care. I know when I am supporting to use Gentle Teaching with the individuals I support, but have found that Gentle Teaching is effective in many other aspects of my life. I use compassion and empathy when I care for my patients during my clinical rotations because I know I would want that if I were a patient. When I am caring for the girls I support, I think of how I would want to be treated if roles were reversed. I want the girls to feel loved and safe because they will only grow when they are comfortable and have trust in their supports. If they have a bad day, I will try not to make it about myself and understand there are reasons for their emotions. Now, I try to see everyone’s perspective in any situation I face. You have no idea what’s going on in someone’s life and pretending to will ensure you make mistakes and encourage judgment. If someone is upset at work, school, or just in the grocery store I try to remember that there is always a reason they are upset and it has nothing to do with me. The pillars of Gentle Teaching can be applied to so many situations.

Everyone deserves to feel safe and loved, whether it be in the hospital, in their home, or in their workplace. Trust is something I want all the individuals I support, patients, future patients, family, and friends to have in me. Knowing someone has trust in me gives me confidence and satisfaction because they view me as a safe person. I use Gentle Teaching in my relationships whether close or distant. Making people feel safe is something I will always take pride in. I love helping people and the best help comes from a place of non-judgment. I am still learning about Gentle Teaching and take pride in being an employee of COR which truly represents Gentle Teaching. It has helped me in so many ways and will continue to help me with supporting at COR, encouraging positive relationships, and giving patient care as a student nurse.

Every year, COR's birthday is a chance to celebrate the people, relationships, and moments that make our family so special.

To help celebrate, we asked the COR fam to reflect on what COR has taught them, what COR means to them, and their birthday wishes for the year ahead.

Cheers to another year of connection, belonging, and making a difference together! 🎉

“If you look at child development, the first two years of life is all about keeping the child very near to you. Close, safe, loved and nurtured. The next challenge for us is to stretch them out of that phase; to be more other-centred.” 🫂
- Simone Schipper, Netherlands

In June, we hosted @simoneschipper from @prinsenstichting to spend some time with our teams. Thank you for your wealth of knowledge and expertise. Visit us in the COR Academy to learn more about Gentle Teaching.

After leaving COR to work in a different field, Joel returned a few years later. What brought him back was the people, the relationships, and a role that felt like the right fit.

As a Team Leader, he helps support both his team and the people who call COR home, helping create opportunities for others to grow, succeed, and thrive.

“Caring is looking at something, reflecting on how we do it, and challenging ourselves: how can we do it better?”

June 21st is National Indigenous People’s Day. We acknowledge and celebrate the incredible stories, teachings, and contributions from the Indigenous people within our COR community. Jessica, our Indigenous Cultural Advisor, has been integral to the innovation that has led us to raising our very own accessible Teepee. Together, we painted the canvas, gather in ceremony, and have created one more space where everyone is included.

In celebration of Father’s Day, members of the COR family are sharing some of the lessons they’ve learned from their dads! These lessons have stayed with them through the years and helped shape who they are today.

To all the dads, grandpas, and father figures in our community, thank you and Happy Father’s Day!

Really grateful to share that COR and Inclusion Regina are among the recipients of the 2026 McKercher LLP Community Fund!

This support will help open doors to more Indigenous cultural experiences and meaningful community connection for people with disabilities here in Saskatchewan.

A big thank you to McKercher LLP for investing in stronger, more inclusive communities.

Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder is often called an invisible disability, but its impact is very real.

Dillon, a FASD facilitator at COR Academy shares why understanding FASD matters and how shifting our perspective can help us better support the people in our lives and communities.

One of the key takeaways from the workshop is moving from a mindset of "they won't" to "they can't right now." By understanding the brain-based challenges that can come with FASD, we can approach situations with greater empathy, patience, and compassion.
