Gentle Teaching Stories:

“I’m empowered to new heights as a leader, support, and friend.”

July 25, 2023/inBlog, Gentle Teaching, Stories

COR has empowered me to consistently reach new heights as a leader, support, and friend by investing in my growth by believing in my character & vision. Being shown years of opportunity, I am now motivated to actively show others their worth and help them access similar opportunities. I now understand where my heart truly is; seeing people lead healthy, fulfilling and purposeful lives.

The work I’ve done with COR consistently reveals how fulfilling it is to see those I care about succeed in their own ways and understand that every person has a unique gift to offer the world. This valuable insight has helped concentrate my passion for health and wellness into a meaningful future filled with empowering people to become the best versions of themselves. The Gentle Teaching philosophy incorporates compassion for people, putting dignity and respect at the forefront of the way we offer support. I’ve learned to see people for the amazing qualities they have, rather than treating them as a condition, behaviour, trauma, or challenge.

“Really, it starts and ends right there; continuously empathizing with people and treating them as a person first.”

Gentle Teaching provides unique tools to best support the needs of that person to begin healing / progressing as they are, rather than simply meeting a standard set for them. Adopting this philosophy has been one of the most natural and important investments I’ve made in myself and who I am becoming.

Every day, we interact with people in our homes, neighbourhoods, communities and social groups. From how we greet a friend, to simply holding the door for a complete stranger, it is the genuineness in that encounter that defines our character. Gentle Teaching has taught me to be mindful of the way I interact with people as they may not remember what we say or what we do, but the love and compassion we show will make a lasting impact. Gentle Teaching showed me how much growth I needed to find within myself in order to care for and nurture all of my past, current, and future relationships. The way we treat other people is a true reflection of how much love we are first able to give ourselves.

The adoption of Gentle Teaching has facilitated the person I aspire to be and the direction my life is moving so naturally. It has shown me the power of relationships and how essential it is to build connection with others in order to establish trust and foster growth between both parties. Throughout more than five years with COR and under this philosophy, I have learned that the only way to empower someone to accept support and grow as an individual, trust must be established and remain at the core of your relationship. Growth and improvement is often met with hesitation, and when people experience a revolving door of support and people in their lives, lack of trust prevents any growth.

“Utilization of Gentle Teaching within my life has allowed me to reach a better version of myself daily.”

It has directly impacted the support I give and teaches me to accept the support from others, trusting they will be there for me when I need it as well. It has taught me the importance of my presence and how to project my energy in a loving, safe and welcoming way. Providing equitable opportunities for people to intrinsically see value in themselves and invest in their health is my passion. My vision and direction requires the utmost patience, unconditional acceptance and trust built every step moving forward. When people actively get the impression that we as supports aren’t leaving, a door for continuous trust and companionship presents itself. This can only occur when gentle teaching is at the core of the connections we build with people, which is precisely the person I aim to be everyday.

We had the opportunity to host a Rattle Making Workshop with kêhtê-ayak Nina Wilson and her oskâpêwis helper, Daniel Sangrey.

Participants created traditional rattles using elk hide while learning about their meaning and significance. In the Nehiyawak creation story it is taught that the beginning of the universe was sound. The rattle represents this sound through its rumbling & thunder-like voice. They are also connected to spring as the Nehiyawak spring starts when the first thunderstorm arrives. The rattle also accompanies the drum, with the drum being the heartbeat of turtle island (Kokum turtle) and the rattle being the rhythm of that heartbeat.

Thank you to Nina and Daniel for sharing their knowledge and to everyone who joined us. It was a meaningful experience centered on learning, culture, and connection!

After years in a different industry, Jeff decided to try something new and found a role centered around connection and community.

Working with youth, building relationships, and showing up with empathy each day is what makes this work meaningful to him. From supporting daily routines to exploring interests in the community, every moment is about meeting people where they’re at and being present.

At the recent Prairie Sexuality & Disability Conference, Natalya Mason shared powerful insights on how disability, gender, and sexuality intersect.

Her message was clear: identity is layered, language matters, and inclusion starts by challenging assumptions and listening with intention.

Creating spaces where people feel seen, respected, and supported isn’t optional, it’s essential.

Since 2022, the Prairie Sexuality & Disability Conference has been more than just another event. It’s a space where conversations spark connection, ideas turn into action, and people leave feeling a little less alone.

One organization that has been a consistent part of this journey is SIECCAN (Sex Information and Education Council of Canada). Their evidence-based resources empower educators, self-advocates, caregivers, and allies, giving attendees practical tools to take back into their communities.

Want to see how PSD CON is making real change and why resources like SIECCAN’s matter so much? Check out the full story in our latest blog post, LINK IN BIO!

Love is not a privilege. It’s a human right. ❤️

At the recent Prairie Sexuality & Disability Conference, Dr. Karyn Harvey delivered a keynote that challenged all of us to rethink support — and to centre something essential: connection.

Featured on CBC Saskatchewan’s The Morning Edition, Dr. Harvey spoke about loneliness as a public health crisis, the trauma of exclusion, and why safety alone isn’t enough. People deserve real love, real intimacy, real belonging.

Through powerful stories of couples who waited decades for their first “real date,” partners who stood by each other through illness, and individuals whose loneliness left them vulnerable, one message was clear: Connection is prevention. Connection is healing. Connection is a right.
