Gentle Teaching Stories:

“It showed me how I want to nurture those around me.”

July 25, 2023/inBlog, Gentle Teaching, Stories

I learned about Creative Options Regina through my father, who works with Regina Public Schools. I was encouraged to apply based on his experiences with COR as an organization, as well as the level of respect he has for the philosophy of Gentle Teaching.

I had never heard of Gentle Teaching before coming to COR, and I remember sitting in my first Gentle Teaching training and thinking that this philosophy is so amazing and really gives the whole picture of how I want to nurture those around me. I realized how important it is for me to be present, in all my relationships and how it can make others feel. It was not until learning about Gentle Teaching that I realized what it means to be present with someone, and I immediately was able to identify who in my life was giving me their presence and who was not.

“I have learned how important it is for me to present with those I serve, and how important it is for me to be present with those I love and care about.”

I think that the philosophy of Gentle Teaching and the idea of forming therapeutic relationships has really shaped me into the person that I am today. It has helped me support those I serve and has helped me foster relationships in my personal life. It has shaped the way that I provide nursing care and gives me a deeper understanding of the way I can provide the best care possible, holistically, as well as in Western medicine practices. I had a fair amount of healthcare experience before coming to COR, but after learning Gentle Teaching, the way that I nurture in the healthcare field has grown and is continuing to grow.

My body language is something that I often think about when I am talking to someone or caring for them, and this was something that stood out to me in my Gentle Teaching training. I now take time to think about my body language and understand what signals I am giving off. I believe that I am often seen as someone my friends, family, and co-supports can come to if they are struggling in their personal or support life and that people feel comfortable doing this because of my presence, body language, honesty and the energy that I give off. The four pillars of gentle teaching have shaped the way that I look at all my personal relationships and have become key values of what principles I want to provide, as well as receive in my relationships.

“COR helped me understand the importance of community and the positive effects it has on building confidence, valuing connectedness to others, and feeling welcome.”

COR allowed me to grow and has given me a great support network full of individuals that have the same values as myself. I felt welcome at COR the day I arrived, and I see it as a true blessing to be apart of COR’s community. I’m very thankful to have stumbled across COR, it has helped me grow and opened me up to a new philosophy that I truly value. Nonetheless, Gentle Teaching is an amazing philosophy and it has helped me on my journey in growing into the person that I have always aspired to be.

At the recent Prairie Sexuality & Disability Conference, Natalya Mason shared powerful insights on how disability, gender, and sexuality intersect.

Her message was clear: identity is layered, language matters, and inclusion starts by challenging assumptions and listening with intention.

Creating spaces where people feel seen, respected, and supported isn’t optional, it’s essential.

Since 2022, the Prairie Sexuality & Disability Conference has been more than just another event. It’s a space where conversations spark connection, ideas turn into action, and people leave feeling a little less alone.

One organization that has been a consistent part of this journey is SIECCAN (Sex Information and Education Council of Canada). Their evidence-based resources empower educators, self-advocates, caregivers, and allies, giving attendees practical tools to take back into their communities.

Want to see how PSD CON is making real change and why resources like SIECCAN’s matter so much? Check out the full story in our latest blog post, LINK IN BIO!

Love is not a privilege. It’s a human right. ❤️

At the recent Prairie Sexuality & Disability Conference, Dr. Karyn Harvey delivered a keynote that challenged all of us to rethink support — and to centre something essential: connection.

Featured on CBC Saskatchewan’s The Morning Edition, Dr. Harvey spoke about loneliness as a public health crisis, the trauma of exclusion, and why safety alone isn’t enough. People deserve real love, real intimacy, real belonging.

Through powerful stories of couples who waited decades for their first “real date,” partners who stood by each other through illness, and individuals whose loneliness left them vulnerable, one message was clear: Connection is prevention. Connection is healing. Connection is a right.
