Gentle Teaching Stories:

“I love to see the impact we have on people’s lives.”

July 25, 2023/inBlog, Gentle Teaching, Stories

Gentle Teaching has truly transformed the person I aspire to be. I had never heard of this philosophy prior to joining COR. Now, it is a value I have and will take with me through life.

I live this philosophy daily through the culture at COR, but also at home as a husband and father and all other relationships as well. I utilize this philosophy with my two young kids who are ages one and four. Both kids at times show challenging behaviours in which I show support for them in times of distress. This is one way where my belief of developing the personal connection, working constructively with emotions, creating the culture of hope to further develop their personal qualities, and how I try to model this teaching method in everything I do to continually be that role model in their lives. Through conversations with Michael and Ben, I feel that I have learned so much about what Gentle Teaching looks like in practice.

“Gentle Teaching has really made an impact on who I am as a person.”

For example, my one year old has not yet learned to speak. Therefore, to communicate he often points to items or babbles trying to say the first letter of the word. With him, I strive to create connections, using eye contact, creating that warmth through hugs and positive interactions. If I am not able to understand what he is trying to communicate, on occasion he will melt down and become frustrated. I then get down to his level, picking him up, and being there for him. He is just figuring out his body and strength. I try to nurture positive physical behaviours like throwing a ball, walking, and have fun with splashing in the tub. Gentle Teaching has really given me a different perspective on so many things, while giving me even more patience and empathy to meet everyone where they are.

It is honestly difficult to put into words how much Gentle Teaching has impacted myself as a parent. Getting rid of those unnecessary power struggles and stopping to respond rather than react during times of struggle is something that has had a big impact on myself and my family.

“At work, this culture of gentleness is paramount in everything we do.”

I have learned so much about Gentle Teaching from supports and interactions with co-workers and how it really is a way of being. I love working for COR and to see the impact we have on people’s lives. I look for these qualities in the people we hire so we can continue to be that unique organization and truly be a family that we have intentionally created through everything we do.

COR hit the red carpet at the Saskatchewan Community Foundation’s Friendraiser! What an incredible afternoon of connection!

We were proud to be among the many organizations sharing their work and celebrating the people making a difference across Saskatchewan.

Thank you to the Saskatchewan Community Foundation for bringing everyone together and putting the spotlight on the incredible work happening in our community!

We couldn’t have asked for a better day for sage picking at Kinookimaw Beach 🌿☀️

Sage is one of many traditional medicines in Indigenous cultures and we are grateful for the opportunity to spend time on the land learning about its significance. Thank you for this opportunity.

Matt's path to COR started with a conversation with an old coworker... and years later, he says he hasn't looked back.

As a Key Support, he has supported people at COR, building meaningful relationships, and has had the privilege of celebrating their growth along the way.

💡 The right conversation at the right time can change a young person's life.

Mental Health First Aid - Supporting Youth facilitator Dillon shares why this training is so valuable and how it helps caregivers recognize the signs of a mental health problem, start supportive conversations, and respond with confidence and compassion.

Just as importantly, the course reminds us that we can't pour from an empty cup. By emphasizing self-care alongside supporting others, participants leave with the tools to care for both the young people in their lives and themselves.
