Gentle Teaching Stories:

“It has invited me to grow in ways that I never thought necessary.”

July 25, 2023/inBlog, Employment, Gentle Teaching, Stories

Throughout my degree thus far, Kinesiology has inspired me to care for people- very similar to how work with COR has initially shaped that for me. The Gentle Teaching philosophy has a unique meaning and purpose in everyone’s lives. To me, it solely means caring for people in a way that puts them before anything else, seeing people as individuals with names, goals and aspirations, and developing a genuine relationship with them. Promoting leadership, compassion and this feeling of contentment seeing others succeed through empowerment within their own lives are attributes that both my degree, and this philosophy have given me in the last few years.

What Gentle Teaching has taught me about love and care for people is that it’s not about maintaining clients, or creating a following; love is about creating meaning, raising each other up to their best place in life, while empathetic and unconditionally accepting in the hard times. Each unique relationship is maintained with consistency, trust and faith in each other.

“With the Gentle Teaching approach, I do not have power over you. We have power together.”

I recall a shift in my perception with an important lesson learned within this last year. For as long as I have been enrolled in post-secondary education, I have contemplated personal training and following that path in some regard. Although, observing the way trainers interact with their “clients” has slowly shown me that I could never become complacent with displaying such little compassion for another person.

I have grown into the type of person that puts a name to that client, is interested in their goals, their triumphs and their struggles. I’ve grown into the type that strives to create a relationship with those I may be working with. Accepting the Gentle Teaching philosophy has shown me the importance of empowering those same people to be leaders and providing them the tools to become leaders of their own lives, but also being able to celebrate interdependence with people closest to them or people within the community to create their own sense of meaning.

Gentle Teaching has transformed who I am in many ways. It hasn’t changed who I am, but rather challenged me to find growth within myself. Growth is not an easy thing to accept as the principle of it insinuates the need to step out of a mindset we so comfortably accept. Therefore, growth cannot be confused with change.

“It isn’t what we do or say that will be remembered, it is always how we make people feel.”

The culture of gentleness has invited me to grow in ways that I never thought necessary. My interactions have become warm and welcoming; I have learned how crucial it is to be present in each moment with people. My focus is on building companionship with those I serve and interact with. An unconditional amount of patience allows me to value a person for who they are and not what they may be going through, or traits others may have pushed them away for.

The philosophy of Gentle Teaching was once described to me as not simply just a hat that allows us to be gentle, able to be worn and hung up when we so please, it’s a feeling in your heart that is within everyone. Above all else, this culture has shown me how powerful it can be to maintain kindness, for it isn’t what we do or say that will be remembered, it is always how we make people feel.

We like our kindness how we like our hot chocolate: warm and shared with others. ☕❄️

For this round of 100 Acts of Kindness, our team headed out with hot chocolate in hand, hoping to warm a few people up and brighten their day. Some were surprised, some laughed, some gladly accepted... and a few chose to pass (which is totally okay too!)

Gestures like this are what #100AOK is all about. Showing up in our community, sharing a little warmth, and creating moments that remind us how much kindness can mean in someone’s day.

We switched things up this week… 💛

For this round of 100 Acts of Kindness, we teamed up with our friends at KSP Technology to try something a little different. Inspired by those viral “pay it forward” videos where someone covers a stranger’s groceries, we headed out with gift cards and one simple goal — make someone’s day!

From caregivers to community members simply going about their day, the gratitude and smiles said it all. A small gesture can go a long way. 🙌

Thank you, KSP Technology, for jumping in and helping us spread a little extra kindness this week!

Definitely not the one that danced away. 🎶

Another unforgettable Sir Dance-A-Lot night!

The music kicked in and the room brought the energy. Big smiles, full-out moves, and a dance floor that stayed packed. Another one for the books.

Huge thanks to @chipanddalehomes for being incredible dance partners, @mamaweyatitan_centre for hosting us, and @cityofregina for the grant support that helps make nights like this possible.

Thank you to everyone who came out, danced big, and made it such a great night. 💃✨

For far too long, people with disabilities in Canada were confined to institutions and separated from their communities.

These Four Walls shares the stories of survivors of the Manitoba Developmental Centre and explores the lasting harm — and resilience — tied to its history.

Join us for a screening and community discussion as we reflect on this history together.

🗓 Wednesday, March 4 | 10:00 a.m – 12:30 p.m at COR Academy
🗓 Wednesday, March 4 | 6:00 – 8:30 p.m at COR Studio
📧 RSVP: tim@coracademy.ca — space may be limited

CONTENT WARNING: This film includes old footage and outdated language that is offensive. While these elements are included for historical context, it's important to recognize that such language is unacceptable in today's society. Although the film is about hope and resilience, it does share the experiences of people who have been harmed in institutions. You will hear stories about abuse, neglect, rape, and suicide. Please ensure you have arrangements for self-care should you need it.

“I would venture to say that those answers… would have a lifelong impact on Johnny.”

@h.o.m.e.society Executive Director, Dave Lappin, on the difference we can make if we pause for a moment and shift our approach to understanding the root cause of behaviour.

The kindness keeps rolling. 💛

The 100 Acts of Kindness team hit the road again, making five more stops to celebrate five awesome local legends who bring care, heart, and generosity to the spaces they’re part of:

• Ashley from Saltine Baking Co. (@saltinebakingco), for their kindness (and the cookies!)

• Ashley at YQR Hair Lounge (@yqrhairlounge), for the many ways she shows up for people in our community

• Amy at Big Brothers Big Sisters (@bbbsregina), creating meaningful impact through mentorship

• Andrea at The Bone & Broth Kitchen (@theboneandbrothkitchen), for launching a subscription box during the pandemic in partnership with @CookingforacauseYQR to raise funds for local causes and continuing to give back without ever seeking recognition.

• Chelsey at Excalipurr Cat Cafe (@excalipurrcatcafe) who received an award off camera. The cafe continues to be a safe, welcoming space for the people we support, and Chelsey is always incredibly accommodating.

• Lindsay at Centennial School, an inspiring teacher who brings patience and care to her students every day

From local businesses and community organizations to classrooms, these are the people who make a difference in our city every single day. 🤝

We’re honoured to host a screening of These Four Walls — a powerful documentary from People First of Canada, produced and directed by Branden DeFoort.

For over a century, people with disabilities were institutionalized and separated from their communities. This film shares the voices of survivors and shines a light on the strength, advocacy, and resilience that continue to shape change today.

Join us for this important conversation and stay for a group discussion after the screening.
